The first of its kind in the United States, Journey to Atlantis incorporates the elements of a roller coaster and water ride. Its distinguishing feature is that riders enjoy part of the ride traveling backwards. At the top of the first hill, boats rotate up to 360 degrees, offering riders a view of downtown San Antonio and SeaWorld. Then, they spin to propel riders backwards down the first hill and up a reverse camelback. Boats rotate 45 degrees and are plunged down the final hill, splashing into a lake and through geysers and water spouts. Journey to Atlantis is SeaWorld San Antonio’s third state-of-the-art coaster. The Great White was the park’s first coaster built in 1997. It is an inverted steel coaster with hair-raising loops, corkscrews, and other aerobatic maneuvers. In 1999, the Steel Eel hypercoaster was added to the park. It speeds over camelback humps at approximately 65 mph. The park has two major water rides, Rio Loco and Texas Splashdown. SeaWorld San Antonio is open March through December with varying operating hours and days.
